The Las Vegas Raiders needed to hire someone who could bring the franchise back to its glory days or at least get it back on track. Raiders fans have just one simple request—win a playoff game, something that hasn't been done in 20 years. And the franchise thinks that Pete Carroll can do that.
He has as good of a resume as anyone in the history of football, college, and the NFL. He is fourth in wins among active NFL head coaches. He has a Super Bowl win with the Seattle Seahawks after beating the Denver Broncos. He went to another Super Bowl but unfortunately lost to the New England Patriots. And, before all that he won a National Championship with the USC Trojans.
So, he is fit for the job. But, you have to hire someone that appreciates what the job is, and what it means to be the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. It's not just any head coaching job. Carroll gets it.
"This is one of the cherished franchises in professional sports," Pete Carroll said after doing his press conference. "The following has been so unique and runs so deep. It goes back to Mark's dad, who created the mentality and the aura of this organization. They are calling on us to do something about it. You know? What are you going to do? It can't happen quickly enough for me. Let's get going, let's get this thing moving. With the really highest of expectations and standards, it can be done."
The Raiders made the right decision, even if that means missing out on Ben Johnson, who chose the Chicago Bears over the Raiders. The Raiders wanted the proven guy, not choosing the guy who wasn't proven, or hasn't proven anything at the head coaching level, as that's what they did last offseason with Antonio Pierce, and it's what they did with Josh McDaniels before that.
Well, actually, McDaniels was proven — proven to be a bad head coach as his time with the Raiders was his second stint as a head coach. But, they feel like Carroll is that guy, and he appreciates what he's stepping into. That's what they needed.
