Here’s what we learned about Arch Manning during his sit-down interview with ESPN’s Marty Smith
What’s the most important lesson Arch Manning has learned so far at Texas? When you’re taking selfies with fans, don’t stop. Smile and keep walking. “Don’t stop,” Manning said. “That’s what coach Sark told me. Don’t stop.” The Manning hype train is now rolling, and it’s not going to stop anytime soon. Texas officials took […]
“Peyton was in town this past summer and I wanted to throw with him,” Arch Manning told Marty Smith. “(He wanted to know) every little detail. Where am I parking? What time we warming up? What time we finishing? What’s the weather like? He wants to know it all.
“So it's cool to see that, because that's what you need at a quarterback.”
Manning learned how if you reach out to your uncle with a question, be ready for a dissertation.
“Yeah, I remember last spring, and I was struggling in two-minute drills, so I reached out to him and just texted him, and he sent back like a 10-minute voice audio. It was hilarious,” Manning said. “He just went on and on.
“Eli will cut more to the point,” Manning added. “I reached out to him just about player-to-coach stuff and how you always want to be coachable. Sometimes it's good to get yelled at in front of everyone else to set the tone that you're not favorited or anything.”
Arch Manning said what really impressed him about Eli was how the New York Giants quarterback handled the Big Apple itself.
“I really like how Eli, nothing really phased him,” Manning said. “I mean, he was up in New York with the media. They’d have good years, bad years, and he kind of stayed level-headed. He would throw for 400 yards or throw for four interceptions, and you couldn't tell the difference. So I really respected that.”
Manning has taken the same approach with reporters during his time in Austin. Texas officials have kept him somewhat guarded, only making Manning available here and there or when it was required, like at bowl games.
Team officials and coach Steve Sarkisian went to great lengths to make sure everyone knew that Quinn Ewers was the starter the last two years and Manning was the quarterback of the future. They should be applauded for how it was all handled. But the future has arrived.
Manning jerseys sell like hotcakes, and he’ll be the key reason why the Longhorns are picked among the top three this August or even preseason No. 1. At least one sportsbook has Manning as the odds-on favorite to win the 2025 Heisman Trophy.
Asked what it’s like to walk across campus, Manning said, “It depends on the day.
“A lot of selfies. Yeah, just keep it on the run. Selfies aren't bad, though. You know, you can keep walking. Just don't stop, yeah, just don't stop. That's what coach Sark started telling me. Don’t stop.”
