It wasn't a smooth victory for the Minnesota Vikings but they did beat the Chicago Bears by a score of 30-12 on Monday night. It was great to see the Vikings put away a team they should beat with relative ease, as they have struggled with for the better part of 10 years.
There are many different things we can look at throughout the game; one of them is how the Vikings used their personnel in terms of snap counts. They can show you different trends and those can make a big difference during the stretch run and the win over the Bears is no exception.
Jalen Redmond continues to start
Finding players in undrafted free agency has become a trend for the Vikings and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. Last year, it was inside linebacker Ivan Pace Jr. and this year that player is Jalen Redmond.
Now, Redmond isn't a savior for the defense, but he has been an impressive addition to the defensive line. After an excellent game against the Arizona Cardinals, Redmond got his first start against the Atlanta Falcons last week and thrived in that spot. Against the Bears, Redmond also got the start and played 28 out of 68 total defensive snaps.
Now, Redmond isn't playing the majority of snaps consistently, which is how the Vikings use their defensive linemen. Jerry Tillery, who Redmond replaced, got a game ball for his role in two fourth down stops. Jonathan Bullard played 33 snaps and Harrison Phillips 31. Considering how much they used their four edge rusher package, this isn't a surprise, but they love Redmond and he's been up to the task.
Dallas Turner is getting real playing time
If you've been following me for a while, you know that I've never been too worried about Turner not getting a ton of snaps. It's hard to get in the game ahead of four edge rushers that are playing really well, and Turner is specifically playing the Andrew Van Ginkel role. Are you going to take out Van Ginkel to play Turner? It's a difficult question!
Turner is earning more playing time and it's resulting in success. He played 34 snaps on Monday night with a true balance:
- 13 run defense
- 15 pass rush
- 6 coverage
He rewarded the team with two pressures and a sack on a sick ghost move he hit on Darnell Wright in the fourth quarter. That is why the Vikings traded up for him in the first round this April. He's slowly coming along and that is more than okay.
What's going on with Jamin Davis?
The Vikings signed Davis when they placed Ivan Pace Jr. on injured reserve. It made some sense, as Davis is a high-upside athlete who is at his best when running forward and blitzing.
In the three games the Vikings have had Davis, he's played in just 21 snaps but has generated a 33.3% pressure rate in gathering 3 total pressures with one sack in nine pressures. Not too bad for coming off the street and joining the Vikings midseason.
Now, there is an interesting element with his snaps. He played eight defensive snaps for the Vikings on Monday night, but when they put in their backups late in the game, Davis didn't play. How do they see Davis? Do they not want him getting a lot of snaps even in garbage time? Do they think he's too good for that spot? It's quite an interesting discussion point and something worth monitoring moving forward, including if he stays on the roster when Pace comes back.
The likely answer is the Vikings are using Davis in certain personnel packages in the role they would be using Pace in.
