Pros:
- Athleticism: Jordan Burch has raw athleticism in spades for the Edge position. At 6'6" 295 lbs, he shouldn't be able to move as well as he does. His twitch and motor, and his speed to chase down quarterbacks and ball carriers, pops on tape. His raw athleticism, which landed him on the Freaks List last summer, is noticeable. Not many pass rushers get the ball in their hands on a fake punt and make moves in the open field. He's a ball player.
- Strength: Burch plays with a ton of strength, including heavy hands and the raw strength to essentially bench press offensive linemen out of his way. He can command and set the edge, and can straight bully linemen on his way to the quarterback.
- Ball hawk: Jordan Burch has one of my favorite qualities about a pass rusher – not only does he go for the quarterback, he goes for the ball. He's accurate and technically sound in attacking the throwing hand of opposing quarterbacks, and knows how to get his hands up to swat down passes at the line, with four batted passes in his nine games played.
- Intangibles: Burch has been talked about by his coaches for the work that he puts into his craft and his body. Leading into the 2024 season, Burch was up over 10 pounds of lean muscle while reportedly getting faster as well from the previous season.
- Edge-setting: Burch does a terrific job of setting the edge on run plays. The strength of his hands and his big frame makes him a tough customer for opponents to move off the edge. He does a great job of getting to the outside leverage and not relinquishing it, locking off his offensive lineman to force the play back to the inside.
Cons:
- Pass rush game plan: For as talented and explosive as Burch is, he's still a bit raw. He's likely still coming into his own in his body, considering he was listed at 275 lbs at South Carolina in 2022. He's dripping with upside, and with good coaching to help him learn how to set up opposing offensive linemen, he has a high ceiling well within his reach.
Player Evaluation:
Jordan Burch missing a handful of games this season really stunted the momentum around his name on a national level, but at multiple times, he clearly looked like the best player on the field. His size at 6'6" 295 lbs paired with his athleticism, twitch, bend around the edge, and agility to change direction, makes him truly a specimen off the edge.
Burch is full of traits and potential. This evaluation is being written before the College Football Playoffs, where he'll have an opportunity on a national stage to re-introduce himself and prove himself as a powerhouse pass rusher heading into the pre-draft process.
For Burch, the only thing holding him back right now from being in the conversation with the top pass rushers in this class is a lack of a consistent plan. The talent is unquestioned — there have been multiple games where he has straight up taken over, and Oregon head coach Dan Lanning, as mentioned above, ran a fake punt to get the ball in his hands. That's just silly for an Edge.
Among the pass rushers in this class, it's fair to say that Burch has about as high a ceiling as there is because of his raw traits. The difference is that he hasn't quite realized it, even with an 8.5 sack season in nine games.
Player Comparison:
Greg Rousseau (Buffalo Bills)
Big, physical, and explosive defensive ends that need some polish when coming into the NFL? Jordan Burch, meet Greg Rousseau. Both of these players possess immense upside, some of which Rousseau is beginning to reach in 2024. Even this comp isn't perfect — it's hard coming up with pass rushers that are explosive as Burch and also weigh close to 300 pounds.
