Many players currently on the San Francisco 49ers' roster will be playing their final games for the team over the course of this week.

But, ahead of Monday's final home game of the season agains the Detroit Lions, they added a new face to the mix.

Per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the 49ers claimed cornerback Tre Avery off waivers from the Tennessee Titans.

Avery signed with the Titans as an undrafted free agent in 2022 and featured in 38 games for Tennessee, starting five. He had an impressive rookie season in terms of on-ball production, registering nine pass breakups, but, after failing to take a step forward in 2023, was limited almost exclusively to special teams snaps for the Titans this season prior to being released on Saturday.

San Francisco got a first-hand look at Avery when the Niners faced the Titans in the preseason opener.

The 49ers obviously saw enough from him in that game to view Avery as a potential asset and, though he almost certainly won't play on such short notice against Detroit, San Francisco could get a late look at him in the regular-season finale against the Arizona Cardinals.

All-Pro cornerback Charvarius Ward will not play against the Lions with his wife reported to be expecting the birth of their son. It appears unlikely he will feature against the Cardinals, so his potential absence should provide an opportunity for Avery to impress in Week 18 and prove he can be a potential difference-maker in 2025.
