College football has been through a lot of changes in recent years. Conferences have realigned, teams have shifted all over the place, there's countless games against unfamiliar opponents, and now we're in our first-ever 12-team College Football Playoffs.
For as many changes have taken place, there was a feeling of trepidation that this game that we know and love wouldn't be the same. Taking a look at the New Year's Day bowl games, and it's comforting to see that traditions are alive and well.
Namely, Oregon vs Ohio State, a clash that harkins back to the Big Ten vs Pac-10 days of old.
The Rose Bowl, also known as "the grand daddy of them all," is as big a part of college football as anything else. The game by the same name as its venue was the first postseason game ever established, being played for the first time in January 1, 1902. It has seen countless classics, serving as a pillar of New Year's Day football for over a century.
This will be the 111th Rose Bowl game. Oregon has appeared in eight, Ohio State has appeared in 16, and the two teams have met in the Rose Bowl twice.
Two franchises, one labeled a blue blood of the sport, the other knocking on the door of becoming one, that are in the process of forging an intense conference rivalry, bringing back odes of conference alignment past on New Year's Day is truly a gem and a treat for college football fans everywhere.
Whether or not the format for the College Football Playoffs changes in a couple years, the Rose Bowl should always be a significant part of the college football season. No event in the sports has more history and pageantry than the Rose Bowl, and this year, the billing is as good as it gets.
