The San Francisco 49ers' playoff dreams were all but washed away by last week's defeat to the Los Angeles Rams.

Now they are officially down the drain

San Francisco was eliminated from playoff contention before kickoff of Sunday's Week 16 matchup with the Miami Dolphins.

The 49ers went into the week knowing wins for the Rams over the New York Jets and the Washington Commanders over the Philadelphia Eagles would end their postseason hopes regardless of their result in Miami.

New York, led by former 49ers linebacker Jeff Ulbrich and featuring a string of former Niners on their roster, could not get the job done, the Jets' 19-9 defeat to the Rams eliminating San Francisco from NFC West contention

And a team in part assembled by another old friend delivered the final nail in the 49ers' coffin. The Commanders, with a roster refreshed by former 49ers assistant general manager Adam Peters, claimed a dramatic 36-33 victory against the Eagles on a last-gasp touchdown reception by Jamison Crowder.

The 49ers likely would have required a miracle to make the playoffs and would have been eliminated anyway with a loss to the Dolphins.

But to be officially playing out string before kickoff in Week 16 served as an early lump of coal for the Niners days before Christmas in a season they will be in a hurry to forget.
