The Miami Dolphins are reversing course on their prior decision surrounding one of the more unusual situations of 2024.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Miami is waiving OLB Shaq Barrett.  Barrett will pass through waivers, and if he goes unclaimed, he would become a free agent and could sign with any team.

As Schefter notes, if a team was to claim Barrett, he would be ineligible to play for the remainder of the season.  However, there doesn't seem to be a reason for a team to claim him at this point.

Barrett made headlines when he announced his retirement shortly before training camp was set to begin.  However, he changed his mind back on November 26, seeking to come out of retirement and play again.

The Dolphins made some waves nationally when they declined to activate him by the deadline for him to be able to return and play for Miami this season, nor did they release him.  However, Miami apparently decided to free their veteran edge rusher just after Christmas and allow him the chance to catch on with another team just before the playoffs begin.

We'll see if the former Pro Bowler catches on with a team in the playoff race – including his former team in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  Regardless, the book is now closed on Barrett's brief – and strange – time in South Florida.
