Fans of the Miami Dolphins have been hoping to get a late season boost to their defense with the return of Bradley Chubb. It appears those hopes will not come to fruition.
The Miami Dolphins are reportedly not activating Chubb from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, per Mike McDaniel on Tuesday, which means his season will be over.
"With the deadline being tomorrow, we won’t activate him," McDaniel said. "It came down to this: trying to take away reps from guys that are playing well, Bradley (Chubb) takes that serious and he’s gone after the whole process so that he can be Bradley Chubb for this football team and he knows what that looks like. He’s been very patient in the process, very open-minded, had growth as the process went, but ultimately, we all decided that we didn’t think he would be able to be the player that he expects, that we all expect and just needed a little bit more time that unfortunately the season couldn’t offer us. He’s still all in it, and he was disappointed but also understands the big picture at stake and is going to make sure that when he’s on the field for the Dolphins, that everyone feels the player that he knows he is.”
Chubb suffered a torn ACL in the final minutes of the team's Week 17 blowout loss to the Baltimore Ravens last season, which was one of several devastating injuries to members of Miami's defense late in the year, including Jaelen Phillips (Achilles) and Cameron Goode (patellar tendon).
Goode was activated off the PUP list last week, but Chubb clearly isn't on the same level of readiness as his positional counterpart. Under league rules, the team had 21 days to elevate him from the PUP list to the active roster after his practice window opened, and that deadline passing means Chubb will be out the rest of the season.
The focus now turns to 2025 for both Chubb and Phillips, but with Chop Robinson making an impact in his rookie year, the Dolphins could have a good problem on their hands next season off the edge.
