The Oklahoma Sooners have lost a ton of players through the transfer portal, but most of those players are on the offensive side of the ball. Nonetheless, they still need some defensive help, as they are trying to stack up their roster for their second year in the SEC, where they do defense differently.
So, according to the player himself, they have offered a scholarship to one of the best group of five defensive ends in the country. He's an underrated stud and could easily help this defense.
Sooners offer UTEP DE Mo Westmoreland
Westmoreland plays as a defensive end, often referred to as a "bandit" in UTEP's defensive scheme, highlighting his versatility on the field. This role allows him to contribute both in rushing the passer and stopping the run. In the 2023 season, Mo was recognized for his performance by being named to the All-Conference USA First Team. He led the Miners with 7.5 sacks and had 10.5 tackles for loss.
His standout performance continued into 2024, where he was selected for several prestigious watch lists, including the Bronko Nagurski Watch List for National Defensive Player of the Year and the Lombardi Award Watch List, showcasing his impact on the defensive line. Westmoreland also earned Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week honors for his performance against FIU in October 2023, where he had career-highs in tackles, tackles for loss, and sacks.
A to Z Sports' very own Ryan Roberts has a bit of a breakdown on him and what the Sooners would be getting if they landed him:
At just around 6-2 and 240-250 pounds, Westmoreland is a squatty EDGE defender who can also play on the second level at times. He possesses a nice first step to conflict offensive tackles outside shoulders, and has a quick inside move to counter for instant wins. Westmoreland also has a hot motor, which allows him to make a ton of plays in pursuit. With his natural leverage, he has the ability to get underneath blockers and utilizing his underrated power profile. He’s a unique player who won’t be for everyone but has quietly been one of the more productive pass rushers in college football the last two years.
Landing Westmoreland would be huge for Brent Venables and his defensive staff. They had one of the best defenses in the SEC last year, and with the pieces they are looking to swap in for the ones they have lost, they may be able to retain that title.
Westmoreland is a beast.
