The Oklahoma Sooners are once again embodying what their 2024 season has been. And what better way to do that than to have two miscues at the end of their bowl game that really represents what this team has been? The Sooners just couldn't get out of their own way, time and time again.

Let's start with the drops. As Brent Venables said, he counted seven drops in this game, and a lot of them were big, crucial situations where they could have gotten a first down to move the chains on third or fourth down, or big-time plays that would have led to a touchdown.

But it comes down to the fourth down conversions that the Sooners missed out on, where both fourth and one calls were plays that you and I sitting at home on our couch could call out what was going to happen, let alone the team on the other side of the ball. And, that just can't happen. If that doesn't signify how ready this team is to move on from Joe John Finley, I'm not sure what does.

And lastly, the Sooners' miscues at the end of the game really sum up this season.

Sooners end of game miscues

Let's start with the wonderful drive the Sooners had to get in the situation of a two-point conversion try. It was one of the best drives they have had all year long. Orchestrated by Michael Hawkins, the Sooners were able to get down the field with no timeouts remaining, and they were able to do it effectively.

And, the touchdown to Jake Roberts was a great play by both players. But what transpired after that is what is being talked about most. The Sooners failed to convert the two-point try and actually got sacked. They could have kicked the field goal to tie the game but wanted to go for it all.

"Had the chance to win there, got the coverage and defense that we hoped to get but they did a good job of staying back outside of the route. We held it a little longer, and I'd go for it again given the situation," head coach Brent Venables said.

The Sooners then did an onside kick, one that should have gone their way had they not touched it a few yards earlier. And, even when they did touch it, they dropped it, just another symbol of how this season has gone. I mean, we should have known this game was going to go badly when they walked out with a wardrobe malfunction.

I think what's most important about this season is that the Sooners showed in this game that they do have some good young players that can help going forward. But, for now, we never have to watch this atrocious football team play again.
