The Oklahoma Sooners have their first commitment in the 2028 recruiting class, and it’s a big one.
Four-star quarterback Trey Tagliaferri, a top-100 prospect nationally and the No. 11 quarterback in the country, flipped his commitment from Notre Dame to Oklahoma just days after initially pledging to the Fighting Irish. The New Jersey product is the No. 6 player in his state and chose the Sooners over Penn State, Rutgers, and Alabama.
Tagliaferri’s recruitment took a winding path. He committed to Notre Dame first, which made geographic sense for a kid from New Jersey. But days later he decommitted, and shortly after that, he committed to Oklahoma. Most recruiting observers expected the flip to happen, and it did.
What Tagliaferri brings to the table
Listed at 6’1, 190 pounds, Tagliaferri put up strong numbers as a sophomore in high school: 2,238 passing yards, 29 touchdown passes, and just three interceptions. The arm talent stands out on tape. He’s advanced in the pocket with his awareness, and while he’s not a dynamic runner, he has decent mobility. His throwing ability and pocket presence make him a legitimate prospect at the next level, and he’s only going to improve as he enters his junior and senior seasons.
Oklahoma has built a reputation for recruiting and developing quarterbacks at a high level, and that clearly factored into Tagliaferri’s decision. He only took one visit to Norman before committing, which speaks to the impression the coaching staff made.
Tagliaferri makes his reasoning clear
On3’s Parker Thune recently reported on Tagliaferri’s reasoning, with the quarterback explaining the pull toward Norman in his own words.
“They’re all football maniacs, and that’s who I want to be around. They have a chance to win a national championship. I want to be there at Oklahoma.”
That quote says it all. Tagliaferri believes in what the Sooners are building and wants to be part of a program he views as a championship contender. For a quarterback prospect choosing between programs like Notre Dame, Penn State, and Alabama, that kind of conviction toward Oklahoma is significant.
The long road ahead
The Sooners should be thrilled to have Tagliaferri as the first piece of their 2028 class. National Signing Day isn’t until February 2028, so there is a long time between now and pen hitting paper. Early commitments in recruiting can be fluid, and plenty can change over the next year and a half. But landing a top-100 player and the No. 11 quarterback nationally is a strong start for Oklahoma’s class, and a foundational piece to build around as they continue to fill out their 2028 board.
