The Oklahoma Sooners still need their 2028 quarterback. They’ve got their QB for 2027 in Jameson Roberts and have struggled to make any huge ground in obtaining a pledge from one in 2028.

However, that could change soon. Recently, one of their biggest targets in the class at the position committed to Notre Dame. Trey Tagliaferri, the New Jersey product, was thought to be a guy that OU would go hard after. Once he committed to ND, OU was forced to continue pushing for other QBs in the class. However, Wednesday shocked some people, as Tagliaferri decommitted from ND, and now all eyes are on OU. Ryan Roberts of A to Z Sports Notre Dame shared some Intel on the situation.

Trey Tagliaferri: Intel on the decommitment from Notre Dame

“According to a source, Oklahoma was where Tagliaferri always wanted to be, but there didn’t appear to be a committable offer on the table. That changed after the talented quarterback committed to Notre Dame. That move prompted the Sooners to reevaluate the strategy and push hard for Tagliaferri. Once they did, it was over for Notre Dame, who held a commitment from him for a grand total of six days. There was a point where the money push just didn’t make sense, especially with Oklahoma getting the benefit of a tie.

“From the Fighting Irish side, this always felt like an impulsive decision. It’s early so Notre Dame will recover, but they will most likely need to expand their board now. That concluded one of the more bizarre Notre Dame recruitments in recent memory. Barring something unforeseen, Tagliaferri will more than likely land with the Sooners. I don’t expect him to remain uncommitted for long.” – Ryan Roberts, A to Z Sports Notre Dame

Oklahoma is still keeping tabs on Graham Simpson, Gavin Strang, Nash Henry, Brady Quinn, and Trey Wright. Those seemed to be their backup options had Tagliaferri committed elsewhere. Now, On3 has OU projected as the school to land Tagliaferri.

The New Jersey QB is the No. 11 QB in the class. He’s 6’2, 190 pounds, and can do it all as a QB. The Sooners desperately want him for a reason.
