Following a very disappointing loss to Michigan, Ohio State has suffered its first loss to the transfer portal that will soon open.
The Buckeyes will take a hit to their defensive depth with redshirt sophomore linebacker Gabe Powers set to enter the transfer portal next week.
Powers was the No. 10 linebacker in the class of 2022 out of Marysville, Ohio. Powers committed to Ohio State early on over schools like Michigan, Florida State, Notre Dame, Penn State, and Tennessee. Now, he is set to make a decision on his college football career once again.
Next Monday, the NCAA transfer portal will officially open on Dec. 9 and run through Dec. 28. For teams that participate in the postseason, their transfer portal window can be extended five days after their season ends. A second window comes for the transfer portal in April.
Powers had an interception returned for a touchdown in the first game of this season off a tipped pass late in the game against Akron. This season, Powers has appeared in 12 games and has five tackles to his credit. The Marysville native was the third-string MIKE linebacker behind Cody Simon and Arvell Reese.
Simon will be off to the NFL after this season, but Reese will remain and figures to be the starter next fall in the middle of the defense. Freshman Garrett Stover could be a player that slots into Powers’ spot.
The transfer portal is already set to be very active with players already announcing they will enter it. Ohio State will lose a number of players to the portal, and then they will go out and get a number of players in the portal. That is just how it goes in today’s age of college football.
Ohio State’s regular season is over and the College Football Playoff awaits them. Don’t be surprised if a couple of other portal additions happen before their postseason game.
