The Indianapolis Colts used the clock wisely in the final minutes of Sunday's game against the New England Patriots.
They took up 5:22 on a 19-play, 80 yard drive that resulted in a touchdown. And instead of kicking the extra point to tie it, Colts head coach Shane Steichen made a gutsy call, going for 2-points.
Richardson kept the ball and powered past Patriots defenders to get into the end zone.
After the game, numerous Patriots defenders reacted to this play.
“I think we kind of felt that they had the momentum. Wanted to kind of either win and go for it all, or not go into overtime," cornerback Jonathan Jones explained. "I think they felt like they had the momentum. Gutsy call by them and it paid off.”
Fellow cornerback Marcus Jones agreed.
“Yeah, I felt like we were in the right call," he said. "It was just one of those situations where he made a great catch in a time and a moment and everything. We had some plays before that, so I don’t always think about the ending play, but we had plays before that to where we definitely need to be better with our communication and things like that, so we’ll get that fixed.”
And so did Jabrill Peppers.
“Just a great play call for what we were in. Kind of split the defense. We had to respect the read option to J.T. [Jonathan Taylor]. 83 [Kylen Granson] split out and ran a route. We had to respect that as well," the safety stated. "When it’s a QB run, they gain that extra guy, and sometimes it’s more than the defense has. It was just a good play call for what we were in.”
However, on the play, defensive tackle Christian Barmore thought that the officials missed a clear holding call.
“Felt like I had good position. I felt like someone was holding my leg," he told ESPN's Mike Reiss. "Quenton Nelson is a good player and he came and got me, but I felt like somebody was holding my leg. Real frustrating.”
The Patriots got the ball back with 12 seconds remaining and managed to get it to a place where the coaching staff felt comfortable giving kicker Joey Slye a chance.
With one second left, he attempted a 68-yard field goal. While it was going the right direction, he didn't get enough on it.
New England lost by one point, and it was the two point conversion that gave the Colts the win.
Heartbreaking.
