The Tennessee Vols jumped a spot in the latest AP Top 25 rankings, landing at No. 6 this week after a 36-23 road win against the Vanderbilt Commodores.
Tennessee passed Ohio State in the AP Top 25 rankings thanks to the Buckeyes' surprising home loss to Michigan.
ESPN's Rece Davis has a vote in the AP Top 25 and he happens to be one of the biggest voices in college football.
Davis made a notable choice with his AP Top 25 ballot this week, choosing to rank Tennessee at No. 5, one spot above Notre Dame (and two spots above Ohio State).
This is interesting because Davis will be one of the voices that's leading the College Football Playoff rankings debates over the next week. And one of the big debates will be whether or not the Vols should host a home game in Neyland Stadium.
Tennessee is essentially fighting Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Indiana for the right to host a home playoff game (Penn State, Texas, and Georgia could factor into that conversation as well, depending on how conference championship games play out).
Based on Davis' AP Top 25 ballot, he thinks the Vols should be ranked above the Fighting Irish and the Buckeyes. It will be interesting to see if Davis' stance on the playoff rankings aligns with his AP Top 25 ballot. If so, the longtime ESPN host and play-by-play man could prove to be a key ally for the Vols in their push for a home playoff game. On the other hand, if Davis doesn't make an argument for Tennessee to be above Notre Dame and Ohio State, then he's going to have a hard time explaining his AP vote.
The College Football Playoff committee seems to be influenced by the narratives that are formed by the national media. It would certainly help the Vols if a voice like Davis uses his platform to persuade the committee to give Tennessee a home playoff game.
