Make no mistake about it: The Dallas Cowboys dug the hole they find themselves in by admittedly deciding they'd try to do "more with less" by spending the least amount of money in free agency this year.

They had the cap space (even after extending Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb) to retain key starters and add some yet refused to, as evidenced by the fact that they asked three drafted rookies to start Week 1 and a handful more to carry on significant roles.

There's no excuses for any of that. However, it should be noted that the disaster of a season that 2024 has been has made even worse by their terrible luck in the injury department. Micah Parsons missed four games and names such as Dak Prescott, DeMarcus Lawrence, Marshawn Kneeland, and Brandin Cooks, have all had Injured Reserve stints. And boy, oh boy, the latest injury news is the ultimate proof they can't catch a break.

Cowboys CB DaRon Bland is set to make his 2024 season debut on Sunday after a long road coming back from a foot injury: He was trending to play in Week 6 before suffering a setback, which led to another five missed games. Now that he's finally back, it's Trevon Diggs who will miss the game.

Diggs isn't making the trip to Washington after dealing with a groin/knee injury. Just when they were getting an important piece back of their secondary, they lose the other.

Additionally, the Cowboys will be down perennial All-Pro Zack Martin and Brandin Cooks, who was listed questionable after being brought back to practice earlier this week. Cooks has missed every game since Week 5 as he remains on a positive note, the Cowboys are getting back rookie defensive end Marshawn Kneeland for this one.

Ultimately, it's not like any of these injuries will turn around the season for a 3-7 Cowboys team. However, losing Diggs when getting Bland back is yet another example of how unlucky Dallas has been this year.
