Fielding the top overall pick is already a special moment for the program that helped produce the talent, but college football has rarely seen what we could witness in the 2025 NFL Draft. The Colorado Buffaloes are in a good position to produce the two top selections in the 2025 NFL Draft. One NFL insider shared as much from a league executive.
Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports shared the following from his NFL sources:
“Not only are they both going top five in the draft, but I believe they’re going 1-2, back-to-back.” Should that occur, it would be the first time in 25 years — when Penn State had the first two picks in Courtney Brown and LaVar Arrington."
Our team of experts has routinely produced 2025 NFL mock drafts, with Hunter going to Jacksonville and Sanders following his teammate in the pecking order. Whether it's the Giants, Saints, Browns, or another QB-needy team, most of our staff agree that Sanders is the QB1 in this class.
I don't find it particularly close, and my 7-round mock draft shows that.
And what Hunter and Sanders could pull off is incredibly rare.
During the 2000 NFL Draft, Penn State defenders LaVar Arrington and Courtney Brown achieved a remarkable milestone when they were selected as the top two picks.
Brown, recognized for his impressive size and speed as a defensive end, was picked first by the Cleveland Browns. Arrington, an explosive linebacker known for making standout plays, was chosen second overall by the Washington Redskins.
This extraordinary event of teammates being drafted first and second highlighted the defensive strength of Penn State in the late 1990s.
Prior to Brown and Arrington, the last time college teammates were selected as the first and second overall picks occurred in 1967.
That year, Michigan State Spartans Charles "Bubba" Smith, a formidable defensive end, and Clinton Jones, an exceptional running back, were taken at the top of the draft.
Smith was the first overall pick by the Baltimore Colts, while Jones was selected second by the Minnesota Vikings.
The 33-year gap between these occurrences underscores how rare it is for teammates to excel in the draft to such a degree. The selections of Brown and Arrington not only solidified their own legacies but also showcased the strength of Penn State's football program under the legendary coach Joe Paterno.
