The Detroit Lions have so many injuries right now. So many that it's hard to keep track of for fans and even for us in the media. One Lions fan asked if there was a tracker to help keep track of when players might be back.
Well, Florida Man, there is now. Here you go. We will continue to update this piece with updates whenever we get them.
The important thing to read first
We'll be providing dates as to when 21-day clocks can start and the earliest possible games guys could be back for based off short term injured reserve rules. THIS IS NOT US REPORTING THE DAYS THE LIONS WILL START THOSE CLOCKS OR THE GAMES THEY WILL BE BACK FOR. This is us reporting when the clocks can start and what games they could be back for. We will update each player when we know definitively when they'll be back. Anything else is speculation.
Players that can come back
Terrion Arnold
- Injury: Foot
- Length of injury: Unknown
- Placed on injured reserve: Not at this time
- What we know: On Sunday night Arnold said that he would be playing in the divisional round of the playoffs.
- Update: On 1/7 Campbell said the Lions got positive news about Arnold's injury. Said he could guarantee at that time that he could play in the next game.
Ennis Rakestraw
- Injury: Hamstring
- Length of injury: Unknown
- Placed on injured reserve: November 23rd
- When his 21-day clock can start: December 16th
- Earliest possible return game: December 22nd against the Bears
- What we know: Nothing at the moment.
- Update: On 12/9 Campbell said the Lions will discuss bringing Rakestraw off the IR next week
- Update: Campbell said on 12/17 that Rakestraw is not quite ready to have his clock started.
- Update: On 1/7 Campbell said the Lions think they have a chance to get Rakestraw back soon and that he's progressing well.
Aidan Hutchinson
- Injury: Broken leg
- Length of injury: Unknown
- Placed on Injured reserve: October 15th
- When can his 21-day clock start: Anytime
- Earliest possible return game: Super Bowl LIX
- What we know: Right now we know that Hutchinson is walking again. The thought has been that if the Lions make the Super Bowl, he could be back for that. We'll see what happens.
- Update: Fox Sport's Jay Glazer said the Lions are now holding out hope that Hutchinson could be ready by the NFC Championship game.
David Montgomery
- Injury: MCL
- Length of injury: Potentially for rest of season
- What we know: Adam Schefter reported Monday morning that Montgomery suffered an MCL injury and is out indefinitely.
- Update: Montgomery will require surgery. His season is over.
- Update: The Lions placed Davis, Dorsey, and McNeill on IR, but not Montgomery.
- Update: Campbell said on 12/18 that Montgomery is looking to get a third opinion on his MCL injury. Says right now everything is in a holding pattern that is positive.
- Update: The current goal is to get Montgomery back for the divisional round of the playoffs.
- Update: On 1/7 Campbell said the Lions expect Montgomery to be ready to play in the divisional round.
Kevin Zietler
- Injury: Hamstring
- Length of injury: Unknown
- Placed on injured reserve: Not at this time
- What we know: On 1/7 Campbell said the Lions got positive news on his injury, but that he could not guarantee that Zietler would play the next game at that time.
Patrick O'Connor
- Injury: Calf injury
- Length of injury: Unknown
- Placed on injured reserve: Not at this time
- What we know: while Campbell said the Lions got positive news on Zietler and Arnold, they did not receiver positive news on O'Connor.
Out for the season
Derrick Barnes
- Injury: Torn PCL and MCL
- Length of injury: Unknown
- Placed on injured reserve: September 24th
- When can his 21-day clock start: Anytime
- Earliest possible return game: Unknown
- What we know: Barnes was recently back in Allen Park rehabbing with the Lions. He did not give a timeline.
- Update: On 1/7 Campbell said he didn't see Barnes being able to come back this season.
Carlton Davis
- Injury: Jaw
- Length of injury: 12/17
- What we know: Just like McNeill, Campbell said he didn't feel good about it and that the injury could potentially be season ending.
- Update: Davis has a broken jaw and he will be out for six weeks. He could potentially be back late in the playoffs, but his regular season is done.
- Update: Campbell said on 12/20 "It doesn’t look optimistic to get him back. Doesn’t mean it won’t, but it just – I don’t foresee that right now.”
- Update: On 1/7 Campbell said he did not see Davis being able to come back this season.
John Cominsky
- Injury: Torn MCL
- Length of injury: Unknown
- Placed on injured reserve: August 29th
- When can his 21-day clock start: Any time
- Earliest possible return game: Unknown
- What we know: The last update we got was September 23rd when Campbell said “Yeah, that’s still way off in the distance. He’s doing well, but this is – I mean, this is going to be a while.” The belief has always been that he could potentially be back this year, but at this time we still don't know. The Lions did not put him on season-ending IR.
- Update: On 12/18 Campbell said it's not likely that Cominsky will make his return this season. He's trying, but it's not likely.
Alim McNeill
- Injury: Knee
- Length of injury: Unknown
- Placed on injured reserve: 12/17
- What we know: It's not looking good. Cambell says he does not feel good about the injury. He then said, "If I'm saying I don't don't feel good about it, that means not good for the rest of the year." We'll know more Monday.
- Update: McNeill is officially out for the season with a torn ACL
Khalil Dorsey
- Injury: Broken leg
- Length of injury: rest of season
- Placed on IR: 12/17
- What we know: Campbell likened the injury to Aidan Hutchinson's.
Malcolm Rodriguez
- Injury: Torn ACL
- Length of injury: Rest of season
- Placed on injured reserve: 11/30
- What we know: This is a season-ending injury for Rodriguez. While he has not been placed on IR yet, he definitely will be very soon and we'll see him again in 2025.
Mehki Wingo
- Injury: Knee
- Length of injury: Out for season
- Placed on injured reserve: 11/30
- What we know: Campbell said in his 11/30 presser that Wingo will need surgery and that his season is done.
Marcus Davenport
- Injury: Triceps
- Length of injury: Out for season
David Bada
