After losing to the Tennessee Vols this past weekend, the Alabama Crimson Tide now have two losses before November for the first time since 2007 (which was Nick Saban's first season in Tuscaloosa).
New Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer has had an up-and-down start in his first season leading the Crimson Tide. He has something that very few coaches in college football have — a win against Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs. And he has something that Saban never had at Alabama — a loss to the Vanderbilt Commodores.
Despite the uneven start to the season, Alabama still has a chance to reach the College Football Playoff. If the Crimson Tide can win out (which won't be easy with a trip to Baton Rouge to take on LSU coming up in November), they will finish the regular season at 10-2. The win against Georgia should be enough to get Alabama into the playoff as a two loss team.
Former Alabama running back Derrick Henry sends message to his alma mater
Former Alabama running back Derrick Henry, who is having a sensational season so far with the Baltimore Ravens, joined The Triple Option this week to discuss a variety of topics.
At one point during the podcast, Henry was asked by co-host Mark Ingram (Ingram also played at Alabama) about his thoughts on the Crimson Tide.
Henry, who says he watches every single Alabama game, was quick to send a message to his alma mater amid their recent struggles.
"Their back's against the wall now," said Henry. "You're still the same Bama team. I mean, did you have some adversity? Yeah, but that doesn't define you. It's about how you overcome it. You've gotta have leaders step up [and] embrace that role more than ever. The team's gotta be closer — more than they have been — to be able to go on this run.
"Is it going to be hard? Yeah it's going to be hard. But you gotta embrace that challenge. And I still feel like y'all are the same Bama team — y'all gonna play defense, you can score from anywhere on the field, you got everything you need to be a championship-caliber team. You just gotta go out there and do it. I think these last three weeks everybody is just thinking. Before, there wasn't no thinking. You were just going. Ball is snapped, you go. And just play that style. Play that way. Y'all are still the same team. You still got the same players. You just gotta take the thinking out of it and go play with confidence. Play within one another. Go out there and play with your brothers and go get a W. We're Bama. There ain't no question, we're Bama. Go out there and play, go get what you want…..you still got a long season, a lot of football left to play. Leaders gotta step up and be Bama. Go ball. Don't think, just go ball."
Henry's advice might be simple, but it's probably the best advice that Alabama can receive. Thinking too much on the field leads to mistakes and playing a half-step too slow. Alabama's players just have to go play their game. Like Henry said, they're still the same Bama team that beat Georgia earlier this season.
All of Alabama's goals are still there. They just have to take it one week at a time and not worry about the final outcome of the season.
