While the Chicago Bears are occupied with getting ready for their Week 8 matchup against the Washington Commanders, it never hurts to look ahead to the draft.
The 2025 NFL Draft is still months away, but many general managers and scouts are already hard at working preparing for the incoming class of prospects.
Earlier this week, a few of my co-writers at A to Z Sports put together their first league-wide first round mock draft, and the Bears' selection proved to be enticing.
With the sixteenth pick in the mock draft, Ian Valentino had the Bears selecting a new defensive end to play opposite 2023 Pro Bowler Montez Sweat, which has become a common position Bears fans are hoping the team targets early in the draft.
The Bears did add to the position in the 2024 NFL Draft bringing in rookie Austin Booker, but the selection wasn't made until the fifth round of the draft. Next year, fans are hoping to land an immediate difference-maker to the front.
Valentino had the Bears selecting Nic Scourton out of Texas A&M, a 6'4, 285 pound defensive lineman, who's already racked up 4.5 sacks through seven games in 2024. Here's what Valentino had to say about Scourton's physical makeup.
"Few players have the raw tools that Nic Scourton can boast. We saw Travon Walker go No. 1 overall with a similar profile, except Scourton has a more refined set of pass rush moves and awareness." – A to Z Sports' Ian Valentino
The Texas A&M pass rusher is already off to a hot start this season after racking up 10.0 sacks a season before. With his size and production, he would be an easy fit in Matt Eberflus and Eric Washington's defensive scheme. Washington especially would love to utilize this kind of guy in his rotation.
Scourton's played all over the edge for the Aggies and has even played a few snaps on the interior of the front as well. By now, we know how much Washington likes having players who can lineup all over the front to confusing opposing offenses.
Having Scourton coming off the edge and rotating in with the other options on the Bears roster will give the unit just another freak for other teams to deal with.
Bears Cole Kmet has the ultimate confidence in Caleb Williams leading the offense to the next step in its progression
Everyone seems to have his back.
