Injuries to superstars is not a new trend for the Buffalo Bills, and just when we all thought they might be rounding the corner, last weekend provided another blow to one of the team's most important players. Star middle linebacker Terrel Bernard, who had missed two games earlier in the season, was down on the field multiple times, eventually leaving the game with an ankle injury.
Before Wednesday's practice, as the Bills prepare to travel out west for a matchup with the Seattle Seahawks, head coach Sean McDermott met with the media and provided an encouraging update about Bernard.
"He's excused today for personal reasons, but he is also dealing with the injury still, so he won't be here today," McDermott said. In following up on his initial comments, McDermott said that he would consider Bernard to be day-to-day.
Day-to-day, as opposed to week-to-week, is a huge distinction. At this point, there's still two practices to go before an official designation for Sunday's game, but it seems that Bernard has a good chance of being able to play.
Bernard's presence would be huge. One of his running mates at linebacker, Dorian Williams, appears to be a full participant at practice on Wednesday, meaning that the linebacker group is in decent shape for their matchup with Seattle.
Despite being 4-3, Seattle has the potential to pose a tough test for Buffalo. The Bills have been one of the softer team in the league against the run, an Seattle has a duo of running backs in Kenneth Walker and Zach Charbonnet that are capable of making life difficult on defenses.
Both of them have size, a physical running style, and the ability to break tackles for chunk plays. Having Bernard and Williams ready to go at the linebacker position will be important as the defense looks to contain this talented duo.
