The Kansas City Chiefs have had the unthinkable happen to them in terms of one position group being severely injured. It all started with Hollywood Brown in the preseason, where the first play saw him get hurt, and he's been out ever since. He is expected to be back before the postseason.
Then there are the others, like Rashee Rice, who had a brutal knee injury and could miss the entire season. JuJu Smith-Schuster and others have dealt with injuries as well. So, the Chiefs went and got one of the best receivers in the league of the last five or eight years in DeAndre Hopkins. He is just what they needed, too.
Hopkins will play a similar role to what Rice and Smith-Schuster played, where they will handle a lot of the underneath stuff and the Chiefs will let him work in space. He's also a size matchup 90% of the time, not because he's very strong and physical, but because he has the biggest hands in the league and an insane wingspan matched with his pretty good height.
Also, he's incredibly smart. He sees the game at a whole other level. One NFL insider shared a story about him showing just how smart he is.
"He was at his locker one time and he was like 'Why would I study anyone who's built like me? I'm already the best of those guys. Why wouldn't I study the guys that are different? What does Julian [Edelman] do that makes him really good? How does Julian always find a way to get a first down?' So, he would always study guys who are very different from him," James Palmer said on the KCSN Live Show.
The Chiefs need that because while they do have a very talented wide receiver room, they need even more IQ on the football field because of the inexperience on the roster. And, this quote and story only show you how differently built Hopkins is.
The Chiefs also gave up little to nothing for the Tennessee Titans to basically pay half of his salary, too. So, it's a win-win-win-win, I guess? It's going to be fun to watch this offense at full strength. The Chiefs will try to get Hopkins up to speed to play against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. If he's not yet ready, they will have him play next week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
