Deebo Samuel has experienced a lot of pain at the hands of the Kansas City Chiefs.

So not even illness was enough to stop the San Francisco 49ers' receiver playing in the rematch of the Super Bowl 58 on Sunday.

The 49ers announced shortly before kickoff that Samuel was still expected to play despite suffering from an illness.

Samuel was largely kept under wraps by the Chiefs' defense in the 49ers' agonizing overtime defeat to the Chiefs in Las Vegas in February.

Him playing through illness demonstrates his determination to at least partially atone for that disappointment and help the 49ers exorcise their demons with a first win over the Chiefs since 2014, San Francisco's maiden season at Levi's Stadium.

And with Samuel's importance to the 49er run game in the absence of Christian McCaffrey, it could be a pivotal decision by one of the game's most versatile playmakers.
