Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid expected he wouldn't hear good news on CB Jaylen Watson's ankle injury after Week 7's win over the San Francisco 49ers.

As of Monday morning, that's certainly the case. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Watson suffered a fractured left ankle during Sunday's win over the San Francisco 49ers.

Watson dealt with cramping during the game and upon coming back into the game, he injured his ankle. The broadcast crew said that he was stepped on awkwardly during the play. He was in clear pain before he was eventually escorted to the sideline and locker room.

After the game, Watson was spotted in crutches and a boot.

Rapoport says that Watson will undergo more testing to see if a return during the 2024 NFL season is possible. It's probable, if not likely that Watson will be out for the remainder of the season due to his injury. It'll all come down to whether or not there is accompanying ligament damage.

The former 2022 NFL draft pick played through the majority of the 2023 NFL season with a shoulder injury that required offseason surgery. Unfortunately, this isn't an injury that someone can tough out.

Watson had emerged as the Chiefs' starter at cornerback opposite Trent McDuffie. Through the first five games of the 2024 NFL season, Watson had 6 forced incompletions and a 26.7% completion rate allowed into his coverage according to PFF. He's been a bright spot as Kansas City has sought to replace L'Jarius Sneed in the secondary after last season.

The Chiefs have some depth to sustain this injury with Nazeeh Johnson and Joshua Williams on the perimeter. They can also use Chamarri Conner and Christian Roland-Wallace in certain sub-packages. On the practice squad, the team has four CBs they can call up to the 53-man roster: Nic Jones, Darius Rush, Eric Scott Jr., and Keith Taylor.
