Welcome to another Detroit Lions mailbag. It's Week 8 now and this season has been full of not normal events and awesome events. It's been a real roller coaster for sure. Let's get to the questions.
Is there a way that Jameson Williams can get out of this suspension?
I'm cheating a tiny bit here. This was asked by a lot of people in a myriad of ways, but never under any of my mailbag tweets where I was asking for questions. So I'm answering this one like this.
The answer is yes. Williams can get out of this by appealing the suspension, but he's going up against strong history of players appealing and not getting the suspension thrown out. It can be done though.
The most notable instance was when Richard Sherman successfully appealed his PED suspension in 2012. The big difference here is that Sherman's was a Performance Enhancing Drug suspension and Jameson Williams is a Performance enhancing substance suspension.
The difference is pretty big. A PED is like a steroid where a PES is more like a diuretic, an ADHD drug or a substance that covers up for another drug like Marijuana. We're talking about an offense that is much less than someone taking a steroid or growth hormone. There's a chance he could successfully appeal if the circumstances allow it.
This was to be expected to be honest. Nearly every single tight end that had a rookie season like LaPorta took a step back in their second. I think things will open up more for him later in the season, but right now he's kind of figured out by the league. I defintley still think he's one of the best tight ends in the NFL, but he has to get past his slump like a lot of other guys had to.
This one was weird. PFF has always been super difficult with interior defensive linemen. I went back and watched the film and besides a couple instances where he struggled to get some good push, I didn't see anything that would make me thing he was the worst Lions player on the field Sunday. I thought he had a good game and a little bit of struggle was to be expected with the Lions trying out a bunch of new things now that Hutchinson is gone.
I don't think it happens. It's a long season and while all these teams are winning now, a lot of these wins for team's not named Lions seem a bit shaky. I think it's definitely possible two teams make it, maybe even three, but someone is about to falter and fall of a cliff. My guess is the Bears and Packers. I don't trust either of those teams.
Ideally the Lions would have gotten a trade done on Tuesday when they had time to do it with no practice happening. That didn't go down though, so the next likely time feels like next week. The Lions get back to practice on Wednesday and are full go on getting ready for the Titans coming into town. That doesn't 100% mean they won't do anything this week, it just feels less likely as you get later into the week.
Generally players will go through their initial rehab with their own trainers. As soon as they get the ok to resume workouts, they'll get into it. Players can then come to Lions facility and work with the Lions trainers.
NFL players have the big benefits that we don't have. They're already world class athletes, but they have time to rehab every day if they want to. You and I would have to wait till we get out of work or do what we can afford. I wouldn't be surprised if Hutchinson will be doing some sort of workouts as early as mid November.
I think edge rusher has to be at the top of the list unless the Lions go out and get Maxx Crosby or Myles Garrett. Honestly, even if they did I would still draft more guys to help build depth.
After that a receiver would be great. Tim Patrick is doing well, but he'll be 31 in a few weeks. You can't go wrong with some more offensive line depth either.
That's an interesting idea and I think there could be something there. He has played well outside of those penalties and Christian Mahogany has still not been able to play yet. With all the time he's missing, it's fair to wonder if the Lions continue to take their time with him a little more in year two. If that's the case, then I could see Awosika getting a shot at being the full time starter.
An Allen Robinson resurgence in Jameson Williams’ absence is totally possible for the Lions
Right now things are up in the air with Detroit Lions receiver Jameson Williams. We don't currently know if he's going to do his suspension or if he plans to appeal. If the suspension does go through, the Lions have a plan. "I would say (Lions WR) Allen Robinson (II), I mean we just went […]
