Lions make the roster moves we thought they’d make almost two weeks ago, plus three others
Bachie was one of Detroit’s most surprising initial cuts after repeatedly earning Campbell’s praise. Eight days later, he’s right where many expected him to be.
On August 26th at 12:40 PM, as I sat there and watched Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell talk about him yet again, I put out this very tweet.
I really thought Joe Bachie would make the Lions’ 53-man roster. Aside from the shock of Greg Dortch not making it, Bachie not making the initial 53-man roster was probably the second biggest shock. On September 7th, we are shocked no more. The Lions have used one of their open roster spots to add Bachie to the 53-man roster.
This one makes a ton of sense. He’s such a big help on special teams for Detroit, and he can come in and make some plays on defense when needed. We saw him do it all summer long. He just kept showing up, and Campbell just kept talking about him.
The additional moves the Lions made Monday
The Lions also added recently waived center Seth McLaughlin and running back Jabari Small to the practice squad. It was expected that they would make some room to make sure both of these guys could come back in some way. Sending Bachie to the 53 handles one of those spots, and putting offensive lineman Mason Miller on the practice squad injured list handles the other. No word on what Miller’s injury is or how serious it is. The Lions have talked lately about how much interest they have in him growing as a player, so you hope it’s nothing serious.

The Lions are now at 52 players, and we wrote a story earlier on Monday that points to the idea that they would like to keep it that way. In 2025, the Lions purposely kept a spot open for the first few weeks and would put a different player in that spot. It’s a way to handle the practice squad elevations without using them. You’re essentially using the NFL’s roster rules against them. Look for the Lions to consider doing this with t a veteran on either Tuesday or Saturday. Tom Kennedy makes the most sense.
