The Alabama Crimson Tide and Clemson Tigers go way back.

Two teams that dominated the mid-2010s and split the series 2-2 between 2016 and 2019.

Well in his latest CFB 12 team playoff prediction, A to Z Sports College Football Managing Editor Travis May has the two matching up again, with a result that is sure to leave Tide fans shaking their heads:

Alabama Loses in 8-9 Matchup vs. Clemson

Clemson's newfound offensive dominance shines in victory.

Clemson got completely destroyed by Georgia in Week 1, but since then they have been an entirely different team. They're averaging over nearly eight yards per play since that game, dominating both on the ground and through the air. Cade Klubnik has done a complete 180-degree turn from last season's performance and is scoring 3.5 touchdowns per game by himself. The elite defensive front combined with offensive efficiency proves too much for the Crimson Tide here.

Alabama went from potential 1-seed to a real threat to miss the College Football Playoff entirely in a matter of two weeks against Vanderbilt and South Carolina. Their inconsistencies have been maddening since the first half of the Georgia game. Their pass rush finally got right last weekend against the Gamecocks, but Jalen Milroe's inconsistencies almost cost them again. That won't cut it against a Clemson team that's been surging, winning easily lately.

It's a far fall from grace compared to where the Tide were just two weeks ago this time, but a loss to a school for the first time in 40 years followed by a lackluster response leaves no choice but to project outcomes of the sort.

Luckily for Alabama, the team has a chance to right the ship as early as this weekend against the Tennessee Vols, as a win in a hostile road environment against a top-12 team will go a long way in putting Alabama back in the good graces of critics, fans, and media members alike.

And should they manage to double down and win against a strong Missouri Tigers team, the path back to the top of the rankings is well within reach.
