The Alabama Crimson Tide may have found their breakout weapon at tight end. Sophomore Marshall Pritchett, the 6-foot-5, 250-pound tight end out of South Carolina, has been making waves throughout fall camp in Tuscaloosa. With quarterback Keelon Russell set to take the reins as the starter, Alabama’s offense needs reliable targets, and offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb appears to believe Pritchett is exactly that.

The two biggest friends to a young and inexperienced quarterback are a good run game and a solid tight end. If you listen to Grubb, Alabama has the latter in Pritchett. Based on everything that has come out of fall camp, from reports to the clips released by the university, Pritchett has been an outstanding player for the Crimson Tide. “It starts with Marshall Pritchett,” Grubb said when speaking about the TE room via Jake Boico on X-Twitter.

He profiles as a big-time weapon who can stretch the field vertically, work as a Y tight end in line, and provide blocking lanes for whoever wins the starting running back job. Above all else, Pritchett could serve as a security blanket for Russell, the kind of safety valve every young passer needs.

Alabama’s offensive picture is starting to come together

The perimeter already looks promising. Ryan Coleman-Williams and Lotzier Brooks are locked into roles, and somebody among Noah Rogers (who is back at practice already), Cederian Morgan, and Derek Meadows is going to step up in that third spot. Rico Scott adds another layer. On top of that, the Crimson Tide now have a tight end who, by all accounts, is blowing the coaching staff away — not just in the tight end room, but as an overall reliable and explosive weapon for the offense.

The way this offense is shaping up, it could surprise people if the pieces fall into place around Russell. Having a tight end who can win in multiple phases of the game changes the math for a coordinator like Grubb, who can scheme Pritchett into mismatches against linebackers and safeties.

The necessary hedge on fall camp hype

All of that comes with a caveat. Fall camp is entirely different than the regular season. Pritchett didn’t play much tight end for Alabama last year. He was mostly a special teamer and had only a handful of receptions. The sample size of actual game production is thin.

But if the fall camp he’s been having translates to when they spot the ball against ECU in Week 1 and carries through the regular season, and hopefully for Alabama into the College Football Playoff, remember the name: Marshall Pritchett. He might be the X-factor this Crimson Tide offense needs to take the next step.
