The Georgia Bulldogs nearly pulled off a historic comeback win over the Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday night in a packed stadium in Tuscaloosa.
However, there were way too many mistakes and turnovers for the Bulldogs to bounce back from in the second half as they ultimately went on to lose 41-34.
Georgia quarterback Carson Beck had a rollercoaster of a game, completing 27 of 50 passes for 439 yards and three touchdowns with three interceptions and a fumble. Georgia's defense gave up a total of 547 yards and five touchdowns to the Crimson Tide.
Heading into the matchup, Georgia's defense had not given up a single score through their first three games, nor had Beck thrown an interception.
The loss also marked Georgia's first of the season.
Despite the devastating defeat, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart took a moment with each player heading to the locker room to show his appreciation for how hard they fought.
"There's no greater response of a leader than to be with the guys who go to battle with you and those kids went to battle tonight," Smart said about what he told his guys walking off the field. "But make no mistake about it, that group we got in there, man, they're connected. They're proud. They got pride. And I told them, 'Guys, I don't know what the second half is gonna look like, but I do know this, when we watch it, we're gonna find out a lot about ourselves. We're gonna see what kind of character we got.' And I'll be honest, I thought we were a team that was in really good shape. I thought that we could play them into the fourth quarter. Once we had the situation where we had to get one moment at a time, and I didn't want to walk off the field without telling each one of them how much I appreciated how they responded to those true, tough adversities there."
The Bulldogs gave it their all to come back after giving up 28 points to Alabama in the first quarter alone. The Crimson Tide, starring Jalen Milroe and 17-year-old Ryan Williams, are a great football team and it was overall a game that will set the tone for the rest of Georgia's season.
"One hell of a game," Smart said. "Great atmosphere. A lot of respect for this Alabama team, their venue, and their fans. It was one hell of a game. A tale of two halves. Obviously, we were not really prepared and that falls on me in the first half. We didn't do a great job, especially defensively, but we also gave them short field, and with short field, a quarterback like Milroe creates a lot of tough times.
"I am extremely proud of our team and at half time I thought our coaches made good adjustments. Everybody was positive and I told them, 'Look guys, I've been in a stadium down at Texas A&M probably just as bad and came back to make it a game and had a chance to win the game.' We didn't make more plays than Alabama, so a lot of credit to them. And for us, humility is always a week away and we go to go get ready for another tough opponent coming to out place."
The Bulldogs will now head back to Athens where they will prepare to take on the Auburn Tigers at home.
The Tigers are now 2-3 after losing 27-21 to Oklahoma this weekend.
