Fred Warner furthered his early Defensive Player of Year case with a spectacular interception return for a touchdown in the San Francisco 49ers' Week 4 win over the New England Patriots, and he may still have a chance to pad his resume in Week 5 despite suffering an ankle injury.
Warner sat out the second half of the 49ers' routine 30-13 victory because of the injury. However, following scans on his ankle, head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed in his Monday conference call that the All-Pro linebacker is considered day-to-day.
That designation means Warner has avoided a serious injury and is not dealing with a high ankle sprain, giving him a potential opportunity to suit up for the NFC West clash with the Arizona Cardinals at Levi's Stadium.
"I know he’s hurting today," Shanahan told local media. "But when we say day to day, it gives him a chance to play this week,"
Shanahan provided a host of positive updates on the injury front, adding that tight end George Kittle (ribs), fullback Kyle Juszczyk (shoulder), defensive tackle Jordan Elliott (knee) and wide receivers Jacob Cowing (shoulder) and Chris Conley (oblique) are all day-to-day.
In other words, the 49ers suffered no serious injuries in the game. For the 49ers, still without Christian McCaffrey (Achilles) and playing shorthanded on the defensive line after losing Javon Hargrave (tricep) for the season, that is excellent news.
Elliott avoiding a serious setback is particularly important for San Francisco following the injury to Hargrave. The former Cleveland Browns defender started in Hargrave's place against New England but was ruled out in the third quarter, leaving the 49ers with a rotation of Maliek Collins, Kevin Givens and rookie undrafted free agent Evan Anderson, all of whom performed well against an undermanned Patriots offensive line.
If Elliott is able to play against Arizona, that will fortify the rotation for what will likely be a tough test from a diverse Cardinals run game.
Further good news on the D-Line came when Shanahan revealed the 49ers are likely to open the practice window for defensive tackle Kalia Davis this week. Davis was placed on injured reserve following an impressive performance in the preseason opener with the Tennessee Titans after suffering a knee injury that required surgery.
The 49ers, however, haven't made a decision on whether to open the practice window for wide receiver Ricky Pearsall. San Francisco's first-round pick was placed on the non-football injury list after being shot through the chest on August 31.
