The biggest game on the college football schedule this week is no other than No. 2 Ohio State traveling to take on No. 3 Oregon. When they play, it’ll be the battle of two of the bigger transfer portal quarterbacks from last cycle.
Will Howard is leading the Buckeyes and Dillon Gabriel is leading the Ducks. Gabriel is actually a player that the Buckeyes were interested in as well, but ended up landing Howard.
Going into the game against Oregon, Howard sounds a lot like a guy who is as excited as ever for what is in front of him. It is going to be a big game for the Buckeyes and perhaps the biggest that Howard has ever played in.
“When you come to a place like Ohio State, you want to play on a big stage. This is what you sign up for,” Howard explained. “This is what I was looking forward to. This is what college football is all about. This is what you dream about as a kid.”
After playing for four seasons at Kansas State, Howard transferred to Columbus early in 2024. Through five games with the Buckeyes, the graduate transfer is completing 71 percent of his passes for 1,248 yards, 12 touchdowns, and three interceptions. Howard has added four rushing touchdowns for the Buckeyes’ offense.
Coming from Kansas State, Howard just didn’t play in these top-3 matchups. Now in Columbus, the stakes are a whole lot higher and he seems to get that. Oregon and the Buckeyes could clash as many as three times this season. Next time could be in the Big Ten Championship, then perhaps in the College Football Playoff.
Ohio State went out and got Howard hoping he could be the quarterback that helps them win big games. Here is his chance.
