The Tennessee Vols are one of the premier teams in college football after the first month of the season.

Tennessee went 4-0 in the month of the September, ending the month with a huge road win against the Oklahoma Sooners before enjoying a week off ahead of a road showdown against the Arkansas Razorbacks.

As a result of their strong September, the Vols are No. 3 in 247Sports' latest SEC power rankings, behind the Texas Longhorns and the Alabama Crimson Tide (Bama is at No. 1 in 247Sports' power rankings).

From 247Sports: Tennessee's defense impressed on the road against Oklahoma last time out, a rare victory away from home against a top-15 opponent. For three quarters, Josh Heupel's team controlled the line of scrimmage, and that's an area of strength that should come in handy against Alabama and Georgia. Those are the only two games left against ranked teams, which means Tennessee is in great shape to reach the expanded College Football Playoff if this keeps up.

The Vols are right where they wanted to be at this point in the season. And they've put themselves in an excellent position to reach the College Football Playoff later this year.

But the road ahead won't be easy. Tennessee starts October with a trip to Arkansas before a couple of rivalry games against Florida and Alabama.

If the Vols can get through October unscathed, they'll be a near-lock to be one of the 12 teams in the playoff in December.
