The San Francisco 49ers' Week 5 clash with the Arizona Cardinals might not be viewed by many as the 'Game of the Week', but it is receiving that kind of treatment.
San Francisco's second divisional game of the season will be called by Fox Sports' number one broadcast crew, Kevin Burkhardt and Tom Brady.
It will be the first time Brady has called a game featuring the team he loved as a boy and the one that did not take the chance to sign the greatest quarterback of all time in free agency in 2020.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan will have little interest in the broadcast of the game, but he is likely to have the chance to talk to Brady again.
He did so when Fox Sports did the broadcast for the 49ers' preseason game with the New Orleans Saints at Levi's Stadium. Adam Amin and Mark Sanchez were on the call then, but Burkhardt and Brady did a mock production meeting with Shanahan.
"Uh, I guess," Shanahan told reporters back in August, per NBC Sports Bay Area, when asked if he'd done a meeting with Brady. "Like, a pretend one.
"We did one with Mark and those guys, too. It was good. Always fun to talk to the GOAT."
Brady, per Andrew Marchand of The Athletic, can't attend official production meetings with teams during his time as a broadcaster because of his interest in buying an ownership stake in the Las Vegas Raiders, but he is still permitted to talk with Shanahan and the 49ers players over the phone.
This time, the conversation will be about a football game that will have significant bearing on the 49ers' ambitions for the season, San Francisco having already lost one NFC West game to the Los Angeles Rams.
San Francisco's decision to stick with Jimmy Garoppolo rather than sign Brady eventually led to them trading up for Trey Lance in 2021 after an injury-hit 2020 for Garoppolo. A year later, Brock Purdy was taken with the final pick in the draft. Just over seven months into his career, Purdy was catapulted into the starting lineup as a result of another Garoppolo injury, setting in motion his remarkable ascension that began with him beating Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in his first start following a a win in a relief effort against the Miami Dolphins.
Even after Purdy's incredible opening seven-game winning streak as a starter, Shanahan (h/t The Sporting News) conceded he looked into signing Brady for 2023 amid uncertainty surrounding the elbow injury Purdy suffered in the previous season's NFC Championship Game.
Instead, Brady retired, and now he will be in the booth to provide his view on the quarterback who could have been his teammate. It certainly won't be the last time he will do so.
