The San Francisco 49ers were in need of some insurance at the linebacker position following some recent injuries, and they have acquired it by reuniting with a familiar face.
San Francisco signed Jalen Graham off the Washington Commanders' practice squad on Tuesday, with Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post the first to report the signing.
Graham was a seventh-round pick of the 49ers in the 2023 draft. He failed to make the 53-man roster for his second season in the league, being waived by the Niners on August 27, exactly five weeks ago.
The Commanders, whose front office is run by former 49ers assistant GM Adam Peters, promptly signed Graham to their practice squad a day later.
Graham did not feature in any games for the Commanders, but could be required in the near future by the Niners.
San Francisco's All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner suffered an ankle injury in last Sunday's win over the New England Patriots. It is not a serious injury, however, and Warner is considered day-to-day.
Graham's arrival gives the 49ers additional depth to deal with a potential Warner absence, San Francisco having seen its reserves at that position hit last week when Curtis Robinson suffered a torn ACL in practice.
Robinson was subsequently placed on injured reserve, and his roster spot has now gone to the man he beat out for a place on the 53.
It is often said that the NFL stands for 'not for long'. In this case, the separation between the 49ers and Graham lasted little more than a month.
Kyle Shanahan will be very happy with announcement regarding 49ers’ Week 5 game with Cardinals
Another chance to talk with the best to ever do it.
