The Cincinnati Bengals are hosting another player alongside free agent cornerback Xavien Howard for a workout Monday.
Per NFL Media's Tom Pelissero, free agent running back Leonard Fournette is also coming to town for a workout to start the week.
Fournette, a first-round pick from the 2017 NFL Draft, spent his first three years in the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was waived right before his fourth year and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed him right before the start of the 2020 season. He played 13 regular season contests for the Bucs and all four playoff games including the team's second Super Bowl victory.
Tampa Bay kept Fournette around through the 2022 season before releasing him in the 2023 offseason. He joined the Buffalo Bills' practice squad during the 2023 season and played two games for them last year. He was released back in January during the playoffs.
The Bengals are interested in Fournette for the same reason why they traded for Khalil Herbert last week. Zack Moss could be out for the year, and depth behind Chase Brown is very minimal. Herbert only had one carry in his debut last week against the Baltimore Ravens, and he fumbled it.
Fournette would either be added to the practice squad, or could replace rookie Kendall Milton on the active roster. As Pelissero mentions, the practice squad is the most likely avenue.
