Tennessee Vols running back Dylan Sampson continued his fantastic 2024 season this past weekend in UT's 33-14 win against the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
The Baton Rouge native rushed for a career high 149 yards against Mississippi State. He also rushed for a touchdown, his 20th of the season.
Unfortunately for Sampson, his great game was overshadowed a bit by a lost fumble in the first half. It was Sampson's third straight game with a lost fumble, something that wasn't an issue for the dynamic running back through the first two-and-a-half seasons of his career.
Despite the ball security issues over the last few games, Vols head coach Josh Heupel isn't losing confidence in his star running back.
Heupel offered plenty of praise for Sampson during The Josh Heupel Show, which was filmed shortly after Tennessee's win against Mississippi State.
"Another huge night from him (Sampson)," said Heupel. "Just his ability to understand schemes and get to the space and level it off, he did a fantastic job."
"Reliable, durable, an elite competitor," added Heupel when asked about Sampson. "He's done a such a great job for a long time. You can almost, not take it for granted, but he's a special player."
The fumbles from Sampson are unfortunate, and it's something that can't happen in Athens next Saturday if the Vols are going to pull off the upset against Georgia. But those fumbles shouldn't define Sampson. What he's brought to Tennessee offensively over the last few years outweighs those three fumbles (Tennessee hasn't lost a game in which Sampson has lost a fumble, by the way). And it seems clear that Heupel feels the same way.
