As a response to Dak Prescott injury, the Dallas Cowboys opted for Cooper Rush as the backup over former No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance.

Whether it was a vote of confidence in the experienced yet limited Rush, who had a 5-1 record before Sunday, or a sign of how underwhelming Lance's development has been will remain a mystery but neither option was promising in the first place. Not when even Prescott was struggling under center of this year's offense.

Sure enough, Lance got playing time after Rush mightily struggled and both combined for three turnovers and led a unit that totaled 146 total yards by the end of the day.

Whether it's in response to such woes or not, the Cowboys immediately added a quarterback on Monday following the game as they're signing Will Grier to the practice squad, per Newy Scruggs from NBC.

Grier is a familiar face to the Cowboys, as as he spent time with the franchise between 2021 and 2023. He was even a preseason hero following the team's trade for Lance last year when he completed 83% of his passes in a 305-yard performance and two touchdowns against the Las Vegas Raiders despite knowing he was on his way out from the team.

McCarthy suggested on Monday's press conference the signing was happening as a consequence of Dak being expected to end up on Injured Reserve. Adding Grier gets the Cowboys' depth chart back to three available quarterbacks.

As for who's really starting, McCarthy said on Sunday he wasn't ready to start Lance.

“We're not there yet," McCarthy told reporters postgame when asked if he'd start games moving forward. "I mean, we had a package for him. We wanted to get him into the flow of the game, was the thought process coming in here. Then to get him in when we did, then I took him out on the third down. I just believe in reps. I mean that third down segment there, not that he couldn't run the plays. I just didn't want to put him in there, something that he hadn't had a lot of reps in."

On Monday, McCarthy confirmed Rush would remain the starter and added he was responsible for not getting his quarterback in a rhythm.
