It's unclear yet whether the San Francisco 49ers will definitely get Christian McCaffrey back from the Achilles injury that has cast a shadow over their season in this Sunday's Week 10 matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
But the 49ers all but confirmed the return of one player from injury with their roster moves on Tuesday.
San Francisco kicker Jake Moody has missed the last three games with a sprained ankle he suffered tackling on a kickoff return in the Week 5 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.
He returned to practice on Monday following the 49ers' Week 9 bye on Monday and, on Tuesday, San Francisco released kicker Anders Carlson from the practice squad.
Carlson had deputised for Moody for two of the last three games, Matthew Wright having taken the kicking duties in Week 6 only to then suffer a dislocated shoulder tackling on a kickoff return late in the 49ers' win over the Seattle Seahawks.
The release of Carlson, which corresponded with the signing of veteran safety Tashaun Gipson to the practice squad, gives the game away that Moody will be returning to action, and the hope will be that there are no lingering effects from his injury as the 49ers look to win back-to-back games for the first time this season and improve to 5-4.
