Khalil Davis' arrival in a trade from the Houston Texans provides the San Francisco 49ers with some much-needed additional depth on the interior of the defensive line, an area of the team that has dealt with injury issues throughout this season.

His addition should give the 49ers the opportunity to have a deeper rotation at the defensive tackle position.

But it might rob Davis of the opportunity for a week off.

The 49ers traded for Davis after their bye week, with the Texans not due to have theirs until Week 14.

As Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk points out, Davis is now in position to play all 18 weeks of the season, something only one player has done since the NFL moved to a 17-game regular season in 2021.

Leonard Williams played all 18 weeks last season following his trade from the New York Giants to the Seattle Seahawks.

Davis would, of course, need to be active in every game going forward for him to join Williams, and it would be no surprise if he is given a skill set that fits the 49ers' defensive line to a tee and the fact he played for former San Francisco defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans in Houston.

Asked what he likes about Davis, defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen told a Thursday press conference: "The cool thing is he's an explosive guy. He's twitched up. He's been in our system, and he's had production. So, we'll just kind of go from there and figure out how he fits. It's always good to add depth to a position like that with a good player."

For his part, Davis is confident he will be ability to shine right off the bat.

"I love it," he said about adapting to the 49ers' defense. "It just translates well from both systems, and I think I can flourish in it."

With fellow defensive tackle Kevin Givens dealing with a groin injury that has led him to miss both practices so far this week, Davis may get his chance to shine immediately against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday despite the tight turnaround from Tuesday's trade. He's clearly keen for that opportunity, but his body might have appreciated the week off.
