UPDATE: CBSSports' Matt Zenitz reports that "there's been no direct communication" between Lewis and FAU about becoming the program's next head coach.

Former Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis is one of the greatest players in NFL history, but before all of that, he was South Florida star in the college ranks. His next chapter could find him close to where it all began.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Lewis is a candidate to become the next head football coach of Florida Atlantic University.

Lewis, a native of Bartow, FL, played college ball at the University of Miami from 1993-95 before embarking on a 17-year Hall of Fame career with the Ravens. Since his retirement following Baltimore's second Super Bowl victory in 2013, Lewis has been a member of the media but has not coached at any level of football.

This is where the Deion Sanders comparison, like Schefter mentions, comes into play. Sanders began his coaching career at Jackson State back in 2020 and elevated the program for three years before moving on to Colorado in 2023. The Buffaloes had one winning season since 2016 when Sanders took over and are now 8-2 and in contention for the College Football Playoff.

Lewis would be vying for a position that just opened up this week. FAU relieved Tom Herman of his duties Monday after hiring him two years ago. Herman went 6-16 and had two games left remaining in his second season before being canned. The Owls haven't had a winning season since 2020 under current Ravens running backs coach Willie Taggart, who was Herman's predecessor.

If nothing else, Lewis' reputation as a strong motivator on the field is enticing for programs to bring in as a recruiter. He's a well-known legend in the game and has ties to the state. Would he have the instant success Sanders is having? That's what FAU apparently wants to find out.
