Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables made sure to shout out one true freshman who’s been catching his eyes
Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables seems to be liking his new true freshman wide receiver Xavier “Zizi” Okwufulueze.
The Oklahoma Sooners are banking on depth at wide receiver heading into 2026, and true freshman Xavier “Zizi” Okwufulueze is already turning heads. The Owasso, Oklahoma, product out of Rejoice Christian School just joined the program in June, but Sooners coach Brent Venables made a point to single him out at SEC Media Days on Monday morning.
“Zizi’s shown up,” Venables said. “He really catches the ball well.”
That kind of praise from Venables carries weight, especially for a player who arrived on campus less than two months ago. Zizi is one of four freshman wide receivers in this recruiting class, joining Jayden Petit, Jahsier Rogers, and Daniel Odom. All four have generated buzz this offseason, but Zizi is the most recent to grab attention from the coaching staff.
What makes Zizi stand out
At 6’5, 217 pounds, Zizi is the biggest of the four freshman receivers. He probably doesn’t have the most SEC-ready frame of the group (that distinction likely belongs to Petit), but his physical tools are hard to ignore. He also played basketball, and if you’ve seen his high school highlights, the kid can jump with the best of them. He’s silky in his movements and has a natural flow to his game that translates well to the position.
Coming in as a three-star recruit, Zizi was ranked as a top-500 player nationally, a top-30 player at his position by 247Sports, and the No. 7 player in the state of Oklahoma. Those rankings don’t always tell the full story, and Venables’ early endorsement suggests there’s more to Zizi’s game than recruiting services captured.
Where does he fit in the Sooners’ receiver room?
Oklahoma added Trell Harris and Parker Livingstone to a group that already featured Isaiah Sategna, so the Sooners aren’t desperate for one of these true freshmen to contribute right away. That’s a good thing. The hope is that none of the freshmen have to be thrown into the fire because of necessity.
That said, one of these four young receivers will likely see the field in some capacity, whether through special teams or because of injuries ahead of them on the depth chart. Zizi’s size and athleticism give him a real shot to carve out a role if the opportunity presents itself.
The talent is there. Oklahoma fans should feel encouraged hearing Venables talk this way about a player who has been on campus for such a short time. Zizi Okwufulueze could end up being a significant contributor for the Sooners by the time his career wraps up in Norman.
