It has been a rough stretch for the LSU Tigers over the last couple of games, losing to Texas A&M and Alabama by a combined margin of 80-36. After a solid start to the season defensively under new defensive coordinator Blake Baker, that side of the football has struggled mightily. It greatly needs a bounceback outing against a struggling Florida Gator offense this weekend.
It has been ugly for Florida, who has been down to Aidan Warner, their third string quarterback. The former Yale transfer has had a rough stretch, completing just 42 percent of his passes with zero touchdowns and three interceptions. This offense just isn’t able to function in its current state.
The good news for the Gators is it sounds like there’s a good chance that DJ Lagway could be back this week for the game. From a pure talent perspective, you’ll be hard pressed to find a more physically gifted quarterback in the country than Lagway. Despite being a true freshman, we have already seen the flashes of upside.
At 6-3 and 239 pounds, it’s easy to see why Lagway was considered a five-star player in the 2024 recruiting class. Blessed with a strong arm and dynamic athleticism, he is the perfect example of a modern day dual threat quarterback. The latter is what should have LSU fans so nervous.
While he isn’t the runner that Jalen Milroe (Alabama) is, Lagway is a gifted mover in his own right. Will he be the best version of himself coming back from injury? That is to be determined.
That athleticism at quarterback has been the kryptonite for this LSU defense big time. If Lagway is the best version of himself this weekend, he provides a huge test for this Tiger defense. While they should win regardless, Lagway could make things a whole more interesting for a team coming off of a disastrous loss to Alabama last weekend.
