The Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs have formed arguably the best rivalry in the NFL over the last five years, with plenty of fireworks and tightly-contested games featuring two of the league's best quarterbacks. For the Chiefs, Buffalo has been a test that they've been able to master in the playoffs but have struggled against in the regular season, while the Chiefs are the measuring stick to which the Bills must compare themselves, and the hurdle they must cross, to reach their ultimate goals.
Before heading into the weekend, Chiefs' expert Justin Churchill answered a few of my questions about the biggest matchup of the season so far for the Bills.
Outside of Travis Kelce, and without Rashee Rice, who does Patrick Mahomes look for when the play breaks down?
The last few games he has made it a mission to at least look for DeAndre Hopkins every single play. And, believe it or not, it feels like Noah Gray has been one of those safety valves this season. They gave the backup tight end and extension and he has yet to disappoint.
What makes the Chiefs’ defense as special as they are, and how could Buffalo attack them?
What makes the defense special is Chris Jones, and I don't think there is really any hiding that. He's a monster, and his running mates next to him feed off of him as well. But the one areas Buffalo will try to attack is the secondary. The cornerbacks haven't been great outside of Trent McDuffie, who's a superstar. That will be what everyone in Chiefs Kingdom is watching on the defense.
Who is one player on the Chiefs defense that Bills fans might not know much about but should?
I know I just got done talking about the secondary, but Chamarri Conner has come in this year, with a much bigger role than last year, and has produced well. He's had his hiccups, but he's been really good at times as well with a handful of pass deflections and an interception this year. Connor could do a bit of damage if the guys around him can holdup their end of the bargain.
Patrick Mahomes has a 7:5 TD:INT ratio and a 1-3 record against the Bills in the regular season. Why do you think he struggles against Buffalo in the regular season?
That's a great question that I'm sure a lot of Bills fans wish was flipped. I feel like this is the case for every game in the regular season. He just has a knack for turning things up in the postseason, whether it be the attention to detail, preparation, or even help from his team. I also think that the Bills are just a very good regular-season team that has gotten the best of Mahomes at times. After those losses, he usually learns from the mistakes the team made and they bounce back in the postseason.
Bills expert reveals a player who could give the Chiefs fits that they are all too familiar with from a different rivalry
This should be a great matchup.
