It wasn’t the cleanest performance by the Green Bay Packers against the Chicago Bears. It feels like that’s the trend, though, throughout the Packers’ season. However, head coach Matt LaFleur has an interesting point of view about how the team has played, and how they can still improve in 2024 — even though it doesn’t seem like there’s a clear path to do so after so many games full of errors.
“It's a relief. It was a roller-coaster game, but that's this league, and you have to be resilient,” LaFleur said after the 20-19 win over the Bears. “Not everything is always gonna go your way and you gotta keep battling, keep battling, try to block out the scoreboard.”
While the way the Packers have performed might be concerning to some degree, LaFleur thinks more about the future than about the past, which keeps him motivated and with a strong perspective to improve the team.
“Whatever has happened has no bearing on what's gonna happen. You gotta just keep pushing forward,” LaFleur added. “Whatever has happened in the past, bad or good, you gotta play the next play. That's something we talk about, we stress, it's cool to see our guys be able to go out there and show that resiliency. Just the effort we got on that last play, I always hear coach (Rich) Bisaccia talk about it, and that defines the character of your football team. The effort that we're giving on our field-goal block. You see great effort from the guys all the time.”
The Packers needed a field-goal block on the final play of the game, but they came out with a big win against the Bears, their first divisional victory of the season. Now, the Packers are 7-3 and have a big game against the San Francisco 49ers next week at Lambeau Field.
They have to play better, for sure. But Matt LaFleur is looking ahead, because what they have done so far won’t take them where the Packers want to arrive.
“It's one game, I'm not worried about what happened in the past,” LaFleur stressed. “It's great to come away with a win. You don't feel like you necessarily played your best, but that's a competitor football team. The margin of error in this league is so minimal. It's a .500 league. You have to find a way to win some of these tight games like we did today.”
