The Las Vegas Raiders have been without their best receiver, Davante Adams for about a month now. Well, they have been without him because he is no longer a Raider. He was traded to the New York Jets, where he has now dropped touchdowns and basically repeating what he was going through in Las Vegas, just in green and white and not the glorious silver and black.
So the Raiders have been down on the weapons side. They have been running everything through rookie tight end Brock Bowers when it comes to the passing game, not only because Adams is no longer on the team, but Jakobi Meyers was hurt there for a bit, too. Now they are getting one more player back to help fill the void that Adams left.
Michael Mayer, their second-round pick last year, a tight end out of Notre Dame, is coming back after not having played since the Carolina Panthers game. He's been dealing with a personal issue off of the field and is likely set to be back this week.
"Yeah obviously, he's always been a part of the plan first and foremost," Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce said. "But obviously, with losing people through injuries or trades, I think there's obviously an opportunity there for him. But really, I think just getting him back to par with our team, obviously the new offensive coordinator there with Scott Turner and just getting back in the fold, you want to be smart with it. You want to be smart. But obviously, Mike [Michael Mayer] is a big part of our plans this year, this week, and the future. So, the more we can get him involved, the better."
Last year the Raiders had a very difficult time getting Mayer involved in the offense. It wasn't anything he was doing, really, it was quarterback play and scheme. This scheme, as we have seen, gets the tight ends much more involved. It will be nice to see what Mayer can bring now that there are more targets to go around.
And, maybe the run game gets better because of his blocking ability in certain packages. The Raiders are going to love having Mayer back against the Miami Dolphins. And, he will certainly be helpful for their next few games after that against the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs.
