Wyatt Milum, OT, West Virginia
Height: 6'6
Weight: 317 pounds
Strengths
- Play Strength: Milum is built Ford Tough on the football field. Rushers just cannot wear down his anchor, making him nearly impossible to uproot when he can establish contact. He backs up his accurate hands with strong punches that frequently knock defenders back. In the run game, he drives and moves defenders off the ball with relative ease.
- Technique: Milum understands his limitations as an athlete, and makes up for it his technique. He plays with great pad level and his hands are accurate, strong, and well-timed frequently. Milum frequently mixes up his sets and will use his hands to bait rushers into tipping their hand on their rush, and quickly adjusts to shut down the rep.
- Awareness: Milum truly never looks fazed or panicky on the field. He plays in control throughout the rep. Milum handles everything opposing rushers throw at him with aplomb, and it's obvious he dedicates plenty of time in preparation for every matchup. He quickly sorts through stunts and blitzes. His four years as a starter show up.
- Versatility: Milum has over 500 reps at both right and left tackle in his collegiate career, with good film at both spots.
Weaknesses
- Length: Wyatt Milum's lack of length shows on film. The Athletic's Dane Brugler stated he has 32-inch arms, which will likely push him inside to guard at the next level.
- Athleticism: Milum's lower half is relatively stiff, which limits his ability to handle speed off the edge and leaves him open to counters. On outside zone runs, he will miss his target on the move due to his lack of fluidity. He is a solid overall athlete, but his limitations are evident on film.
Player Evaluation
Milum is a fun evaluation on film. He's a rugged, experienced player who knows how to use his technique to make up for his limitations. His very good play strength, technique, and awareness make him an NFL-ready starter, although his ceiling is likely capped.
I do think Milum is capable of playing tackle in the NFL in an offense that encourages aggressive passing sets, but a lot of teams will likely push him inside to guard if Brugler's report shows up on official measurements.
Player Comparison
Braden Smith (Indianapolis Colts)
Smith and Milum both have the same limitations in terms of length and stiffness in their lower half. Smith has been able to overcome these in the NFL with aggressive sets that allow him to reduce the distance to the rusher and play aggressively. Milum is the meanest finisher in this class, and that kind of style would fit him well.
