Christian McCaffrey will be activated from injured reserve on Saturday, clearing him to make his return from Achilles tendinitis, which had kept him on the sideline for the opening eight games.

With the Offensive Player of the Year making his comeback, the San Francisco 49ers needed to make room on the 53-man roster.

On Friday, they announced they had done just that, waiving running back Patrick Taylor Jr.

Taylor was signed by the 49ers in free agency this offseason and featured in all eight games for San Francisco prior to its Week 9 bye.

However, he has primarily been restricted to special teams play, registering just seven carries for 25 yards.

With Jordan Mason and Isaac Guerendo each impressing in McCaffrey's absence, Taylor's departure is no surprise, though San Francisco could well re-sign him to the practice squad should he clear waivers.

The 49ers have Ke'Shawn Vaughn as their lone running back on the practice squad, and the former Tampa Bay Buccaneer could well make way for Taylor following San Francisco's Week 10 clash in Tampa.
