Recently, as of the last 10 years or so, the Oklahoma Sooners have been known as the school that produces great quarterbacks. Think about Baker Mayfield, Jalen Hurts, Kyler Murray, and others who have come through and made a name for themselves while wearing the crimson and creme.
The Sooners have also produced some really good running backs, too. DeMarco Murray, Adrian Peterson, Kennedy Brooks, Tre Sermon, and of course, Samaje Perine, the all-time leading rusher at Oklahoma.
Perine has made a pretty good name for himself in the pros, too, where he has played with the Cincinnati Bengals as one of their premiere guys at the position, to the Denver Broncos last year and the Kansas City Chiefs this year.
Right now, he is in prime position to win a Super Bowl championship with the Chiefs, a team that has knocked him out of the playoffs a few times now from when he was with the Bengals.
But first, he has to play his old team, the Broncos, who recently cut him.
"It is what it is. People like the young talent. They liked what they liked," Perine said.
Perine's tenure with the Broncos began in March 2023 when he signed a two-year contract worth $7.5 million with the team. During his time with the Broncos, Perine was primarily utilized as a versatile backup running back, known for his effectiveness in pass protection and his capability as a pass-catching option out of the backfield.
In the 2023 season, he appeared in 17 games, starting once. He finished with 53 carries for 238 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown, along with a career-high 50 receptions for 455 receiving yards on a very bad offense.
Perine then quickly signed with the Chiefs, a move that placed him within the same division as his former team. As the Chiefs navigate injuries in their running back room, to the likes of Isaiah Pacheco and others, they have made moves to sign Perine and Kareem Hunt.
Sooners fans are hoping that a former fan favorite, and a Sooner great, does well on Sunday. After this game, the Chiefs will take on the Buffalo Bills before facing the Carolina Panthers and Las Vegas Raiders.
