Cincinnati announced that Rankins is now questionable to play tonight against the Los Angeles Chargers due to an illness.
Rankins was not listed on the injury report throughout the week and it's unclear what Rankins is dealing with specifically. The team wrapped up practice on Friday and flew out to L.A. later that day. Head coach Zac Taylor stated earlier in the week the early arrival would be something new for the team traveling to the west coast.
The timing of the news certainly isn't ideal as Rankins contracting an illness hours before kickoff puts his availability in jeopardy. Fellow starting defensive tackle B.J. Hill is also questionable with a knee injury, though Taylor said Friday he's expected to play. Should Rankins miss the game, rookies Kris Jenkins Jr. and McKinnley Jackson will be called on to play more snaps and Jay Tufele will likely be active as well.
Injuries are all over the Bengals' roster this week. Left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. is reportedly not going to play, though edge defender Trey Hendrickson will be suiting up after arriving with the team late due to a personal matter. Wide receiver Tee Higgins is also expected to play after missing the previous three games with a quad injury.
